Philly Freeze-Out: Eagles Smother Lions in Prime Time

November 17, 2025

Uh-oh. It was a cold and windy Sunday night in Philly. If there’s one thing that has followed Jared Goff anywhere, it’s his response to playing in cold weather games. Goff’s td/int ratio in his 12 career games that were 39 degrees or colder is just 11/9 and his competition percentage drops into the mid fifties. Of course, Sunday night wasn’t that cold, but there was still the perception of, “Well, here we go..”, and the Philadelphia crowd was going to do everything they could to make him even more comfortable.

Turns out, both the environment and relentless Philadelphia defense would make him uncomfortable all night. Dan Campbell continued playcalling after his offense produced 546 and 44 points last week, and the Eagles defense immediately brought them crashing back down. Goff faced consistent pressure with his own linemen getting pushed back into his face. He was forced to throw off platform, and with the running game struggling, was asked to throw often. If you wanted any idea of how the night would be for Detroit, look no further than the first possession for the Lions when Goff’s third pass attempt of the night was tipped by Jordan Davis and picked off by Cooper DeJean. Goff faced 20 quarterback pressures and was hit 7 times resulting in just 2 sacks, but it certainly felt like a lot more.

Goff went on to address some of the questions on the Eagles defensive performance in his post game. “I think they did a real good job. They’re aware of how teams want to attack them and they know if you’re going to throw the ball quick they can stop and put their hands up.” Goff would go on to add, “They also know that if it’s a longer drop back, to get their pass rush going. They did that to some extent.”. The Lions quarterback expressed belief in his veteran group stating that they’ll respond the right way.

The big stat was how the Lions remained aggressive on fourth down but execution was poor, resulting in an 0/5 line. Dan Campbell stuck to his guns and kept his belief in his players. It is somewhat a concern that, as a group, they couldn’t identify that this might be more of a field position game, but this is what the Lions are known for, and the Eagles made them pay.

The Eagles offense faced their own struggles against a Lions defense that was bringing the heat against Jalen Hurts and their run game. As he typically does, Hurts found a way to get into the endzone which was the clear difference maker in a game where points were hard to come by. Saquon was mostly bottled up but did break 80 hard earned yards by the end of the game. AJ Brown was the clear target earner with 11, the second most on the team was 5. The biggest target of all of them was the incompletion with under two minutes to go that resulted in DPI from Rock Ya-Sin. Say what you will about the penalty, as it created quite the controversy, but the Lions had many opportunities prior to that play to not be in that situation.

In the end, Philly protected their house and improved to 8-2. Their defense will continue to hold things down for them but I’m a little surprised that the offense continues to struggle like they have been. But if we’ve learned anything about Philly, never doubt them. As for Detroit, they slip out of first place in their division. With the Bears continuing to find ways to win, they may be in store for a closer division race than they initially thought. Like Goff stated, they’re a veteran group that will respond well but they’re about to be tested the rest of the way.
