Jahmyr Gibbs’ Monster OT Run Lifts Lions Past Giants in Wild 1,011-Yard Shootout
November 24, 2025
Jaxson Dart would sit out once again for New York as he takes his time coming back from a concussion. That would mean that the Lions would get Jameis Winston making his second start in a row. Famous Jameis is always must watch television and Sunday’s version was no different. Although, I definitely didn’t see these results coming!
The two teams combined for 1,011 yards of offense, and truthfully, the Giants did enough to win this game and might’ve had they drawn nearly any other opponent. But, the Lions have Gibbs, and they FED him. Just a few days after Dan Campbell publicly stated that they would be looking to give David Montgomery more looks, they completely phased him out. Montgomery received his second lowest number of carries (5) of the season and it resulted in his lowest rushing total of the season with 18 yards. Gibbs’ final line was 15 carries for 219 yards and two touchdowns, including a 69 yard run in overtime to seal the victory. He also chipped in 11 catches for 45 yards and another touchdown through the receiving game. No one was busier than Gibbs.
Per Next Gen Stats, Jahmyr Gibbs reached a top speed of 22.17 mph on his 69-yard touchdown run in overtime. That’s good enough for the fourth fastest speed by a ball carrier this season and Gibbs’ third time over 22 mph. Yes, that means Gibbs is responsible for three of the top four recorded speeds this season. Just insane work.
After that information dump, you’d probably think the Lions just ran over the Giants. We definitely thought they would. But the Lions were on the receiving end of a great Jameis Winston performance, and he (for the most part) did not disappoint. Winston out dueled Jared Goff in this one, throwing for 366 yards and 2 scores, and he added a receiving touchdown through the air. It was actually an incredible sight. Winston shook off Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes and danced his way into the endzone. It wasn’t totally pretty, it kind of looked like your old uncle had a few too many at the BBQ and wasn’t able to walk straight, but dang, if he didn’t at least make it look cool.
New York had as much as a 17-7 lead and were rolling for most of the game. Per the Fox broadcast, the Giants offense had 10 catches of 20+ yards which is the most since 1991. Winston was working with Wan’Dale Robinson (8 for 156 yards, 1 td), the running backs were churning out solid yardage, it was a battle. But anytime Detroit gave Gibbs the rock, he would find a way to move the chains himself – Keeping the Lions team in it despite the dwindling clock. The Lions defense flexed the Detroit muscle and eventually forced an interception from Jameis which was really the turning point in the game.
The Lions final drive fizzled and Jake Bates was asked to come out and nail a 59 yarder to send it to OT. Even Dan Campbell made a nervous face as the kick left Bates’ foot as it appeared to hook right but snuck in there at the very last second to tie things up. Detroit won the coin toss and only needed one play to secure the victory. Goff handed the ball to Gibbs and 69 yards later the Lions found themselves 7-4 and still fighting for their division. New York gave them EVERYTHING they could handle but winning teams find ways to get it done and that’s what Detroit was able to do when Aidan Hutchinson delivered the walk off sack. They’ll have a very quick turnaround with Green Bay coming to town on Thursday. Both teams carry a 7-4 record into the week 13 showdown.
