Chiefs Kingdom Crumbles

December 15, 2025

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This year, the Kansas City Chiefs have fallen quite aways, and will ultimately miss the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, after a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

In a stunning development, the Denver Broncos and Chargers have surpassed the Chiefs in the AFC West, and the Chiefs are only above the lowly Las Vegas Raiders. It is crazy to think the Chiefs, who have dominated the AFC for so long, are not even going to be in the playoffs.

For so long, the titans (no, not those Titans) of the AFC have tried to take the Chiefs by using draft capital, cap space and coaching changes to ‘keep up with the Hunts,’ as it were. Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills have come so close. Lamar Jackson and the Ravens were also a bad pass and a goal line fumble from eliminating the Chiefs in the playoffs. Several Super Bowl appearances and titles. The Chiefs were the ones to beat for so long, and were the new New England Patriots: the team everyone loved to hate. Through Swiftie fever and the “New Heights” podcast, or Brittany Mahomes always staying in the news for one reason or another, the Chiefs have been there. No more in 2025.  And the fall couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

In 2025, the Chiefs have been subject to the losses other teams have suffered at their hands; bad calls from officiating, interceptions, drops, fumbles, missed field goals, and just plain dumb luck. From here on out this season, they are playing for pride. With Gardner Minshew at the helm, there will be a need to adjust quickly. I don’t think Andy Reid’s job security is on the line; anyone thinking that is just plain foolish. They would be crazy to let him go. If Reid were to go, it would be on his own terms, as he will surely be a Hall of Fame coach. There is still going to be some fight in the Chiefs, but it will end along with 18 other teams: after January 7. It will remain to be seen just how long this will last; just one season, or is it for good?
