Break Glass in Case of Emergency: Colts Dial Up Uncle Phil
December 12, 2025
The Colts have a disaster and are resorting to 44-year-old “uncle” Philip Rivers to lead Indianapolis back into the playoff picture. Currently sitting at 8-5, they’re just on the cusp of making the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
After Daniel Jones tore his right achilles, the Colts found themselves in a panic to find a quarterback quickly to help lead them back into the playoffs, and hopefully the Super Bowl. Not long ago, they gave up two first round picks for Sauce Gardner, so they aren’t exactly in a position to miss out on a spot this season. With very few options and many declined offers, the Colts find their last resort in Philip Rivers. After almost 5 years of retirement, he will make his return this Sunday in Seattle.
The Colts had several other options, like Taylor Heinicke, Nate Sudfeld, Clayton Tune, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson available, so you can only wonder if this was the best outcome for the Colts. They even could have turned to backup Anthony Richardson, who finally returned to practice this Wednesday after suffering a fractured eye socket. Yet, the front office is still turning towards the well-loved San Diego vet. We’ll see this Sunday if Rivers still has the impressive passer rating he once did (97.0% in his final season as a Charger). Considering he currently holds the all-time franchise record for career passing rating, plus the most passing yards and touchdowns for the team, it’s probably safe to say the Colts are making the right decision.
